This proposal exists on Lake Alice on the University of Florida's campus in Gainesville. It contains two structures: one celebrates the creation of life (baptism) and the other celebrates the end of life (funeral).

Section through baptism/beginning-of-life spaces.

Section through both structures sitting across the lake from each other. Their orientations are important in their meanings: in order to celebrate one aspect of life, you must acknowledge and have gratitude for both types of occasions.

The repetition of the vertical elements in the funeral procession space can be seen here.

Plan drawing of structures on Lake Alice. The baptism space is larger while still being intimate, while on the opposite side of the lake the funeral space is long and repetitive. This repetition on the end-of-life structure serves as a constant element in meditation for those mourning lost loved ones.

PROCESS
The positioning of the interventions within the lake were crucial to acknowledge their importance to the experience of the visitors. The process of this project allowed me to examine the structure and how best to represent the intended meanings of these spaces.
These tone diagrams (above) were created to analyze the use of spaces and their overlapping rhythms/geometries. The left diagram is the death worship space and the right diagram is the birth worship space.
